4 Tips To Staying Hydrated While Pregnant

Staying hydrated before and now while pregnant should be an easy task, but it’s never been that way for me. Before getting pregnant, I always struggled to drink enough water throughout the day. I would get busy at work and before I knew it be driving home and barely consumed one bottle. That changed a little bit during my first trimester because I seemed to always be thirsty, I would guzzle down bottles of water so I thought the uptake in water continue to be an easy task for me. However, as I entered my second trimester I felt that thirst wear off and started to worry I wasn’t getting enough hydration.

I would usually end up chugging water before bed to make up for my lack of intake during the day, making my nighttime trips to the bathroom even more frequent then they already were causing me to lose even more sleep. I decided I needed to come up with a plan on how to consume 12 to 13 8 oz glasses of water consistently through each day! I’m also still working out 3 to 4 times a week, so I know my water intake on those days should be even higher. Plus, it helps me ward off headaches and ease constipation and fatigue – which are all real issues. Here’s a few tips that have helped me along the way! Again, every pregnancy is different and this is just what is working for me at the moment!

Line Up Your Water Bottles: I have been trying to keep a glass water bottle on hand at all times! Having the bottle on my desk at work helps me remember to continually drink water and fill it back up when it empties. It’s also great to have more than one in different spots so you are always prepared! Keep one in your work bag, handbag, work desk, car and bedside table and you will be less annoyed having to get up and find one!

Keep A Tally: So I don’t over analyze or worry, I mark down each glass as I go. I’m an old school girl, so making checks in my planner is easiest but there are tons of apps you could use to track it as well! The apps can be helpful because you can add in if you have a cup of coffee or tea that day or get in a workout and it will account for your adjusted water requirement taking the guess work out of it for you!

Mix It Up: Drinking water can get old, real quick. I like to mix in a hot tea every now and then, since it’s so cold right now. I try to have a cup in the afternoon or to wind down with at night too occasionally and it really helps break up the monotony of chugging water all day. Truth be told, a hot cup of Pure Leaf Tea and a face mask is one of my happy places.

I know I’ve talked about the brand before but I love how they are committed to natural ingredients and created from real tea leaves. They’re grown in India, Sri Lanka, Kenya and Indonesia and the brand is dedicated to sustainability. Yesterday, I ventured downtown all day and made sure to brew a cup to go so I would be prepared.

Don’t forget About Fruit: Fruit is another amazing way I try to keep my water intake up. I have a pear everyday at lunch that packs 4 and 1/2 ounces of water and try to snack on whatever fresh fruit we have at home in the evening. You can sometimes forget how much water is in most fruit so make sure you are packing ahead!

Right now, Target is having an amazing deal so I stocked up on Pure Leaf Tea. You can save 15% when you use the Cartwheel app and be sure to pick up some of the new flavors! What is your favorite way to stay hydrated pregnant or not? I’ve always had trouble with it!

  1. I’ve been drinking more tea lately after getting this bomb ass Teavana steeper. Truth be told, I think it’s because I like how neat the thing is more so than the actual tea, but maybe one day I’ll replace my coffee with tea 😉

  2. Yes, fruit is such a great way to add in more water. I ate SO many bowls of berries and watermelon when I was pregnant!

Keep a water bottle nearby at all times does the trick for me! I’m a big tea drinker too 🙂 Try David’s Tea – they have the most AMAZING dessert teas that are totally guilt free (and you get your water in too).
